Eight years in, Grant and Jamie McKenzie of McKenzie Drainage & Earthworks Ltd have mastered the balance between heavy machinery and smart business systems.

What began as a 2018 partnership has evolved into a versatile operation across the Waipa, Waikato, and Waitomo districts. Whether they’re working with local farmers or property developers in Matamata, Morrinsville, or Te Awamutu, the team takes immense pride in every site transformation. As they put it: "The best part is seeing a project go from a discussion and an idea to a complete reality. We aim to go above and beyond to exceed expectations every time we’re on site."

Covering three districts means there is no room for messy paperwork. For Grant and Jamie, keeping the office side simple allows them to stay focused on the job site.

"Simplifying the payroll system has been essential in the day-to-day tracking of jobs, and also makes the transition from jobs completed to invoicing the client straightforward and clear" says Jamie. “I recommend PaySauce to anyone that I speak to regarding payroll or timesheets. The customer support and efficiency of the app really makes it a pleasure to use.”

Their advice to other small business owners is simple: know your numbers and your worth. "Don’t just charge what everyone else is charging; it needs to be specific to your standards. Respect and work with other local businesses, and always be willing to ask questions."

From the first dig to the final invoice, the McKenzie team is proof that when you combine the right gear with the right systems, you can take on any project - big or small.
