Payroll Resources and Guides for Small Business | PaySauce

The part of payroll no one talks about

Hiring someone should be exciting!

You’ve found the right person, they’ve said yes, and you’re ready to get them started. Then come the questions.

Which award are they under? What classification are they? Is this the right rate? Do any allowances apply? What actually needs to go in their contract? And that’s before you’ve dealt with your first leave request, roster change, performance issue or awkward employee conversation.

For a small business without an HR department, a surprising amount of running a team comes down to figuring things out as you go. You might know your business inside out, but that doesn’t mean you have the Hospitality Award memorised or know exactly what should go into a warning letter.

That’s the gap Fitz HR is built to fill. It gives Australian small businesses somewhere to go when those questions come up, with guidance based on the modern award that actually applies to their team, tools to check rates and classifications, employment documents, and access to HR professionals when the situation needs a real person.

Then there’s payday. Once the team is set up and the hours are worked, PaySauce takes care of the payroll side, bringing together timesheets, leave, pay, super and tax.

It’s why we are partnering with Fitz HR. Running a team involves a lot more than payroll, but payroll is a whole lot easier when the people side is sorted too.

What does that actually look like?

1. You hire someone new

You’ve finally found them.

The person who interviewed well, can actually work Saturdays and didn’t disappear after you offered them the job.

Great. Now comes the paperwork.

Contract. Policies. Position details. All the paperwork that somehow comes with one person starting work. And this is the stuff you want sorted before their first shift, not three months later when you’re digging through emails trying to remember what was agreed.

FitzHR can help get the employment side in order, including the contracts and documents you need.

Then PaySauce takes care of payday. Award interpretation, rates, penalties and allowances are handled in the software, so you’re not sitting there with an award open in one tab and a calculator in the other.

New employee sorted. Payday sorted. When their first payday rolls around, there’s no last-minute scramble to work out what they should be paid. Now you just need them to show up on Saturday.

2. Someone wants to change their hours

One of your team pulls you aside.

They’ve been working the same roster for months, but now they need to change their availability. No more Thursday nights, fewer weekends, maybe a different start time.

Seems simple enough. But depending on their employment arrangement, changing someone’s regular hours isn’t always as easy as updating next week’s roster. What was agreed when they started? Does the change need to be documented? Is everyone actually on the same page?

That’s where FitzHR can help. They can guide you through the employment side of the change and make sure any updates are properly documented.

Once it’s agreed, update their details in PaySauce and keep moving.

Changing the roster is easy-ish. Knowing the rules around it? That’s tricky.

3. Someone keeps showing up late

It happened once. Fine.

Then again.

Now it’s happening enough that you probably need to do something about it. But what exactly?

You don’t want to go straight in with a formal warning if that’s overkill. You also don’t want to keep letting it slide until everyone else starts wondering why they bother showing up on time.

This is the kind of thing FitzHR can help with. They can talk you through what the right next step is, whether anything needs to be documented and how to handle it properly.

So you can deal with it and get on with your day.

4. You need to have that conversation

It’s 9:47pm. You should be watching Netflix. Instead, you’re on Google typing:

“How do I fire someone Australia”

Maybe it hasn’t even reached that point. Someone keeps turning up late. An employee hasn’t shown up for a shift. Performance has become a problem. You need to issue a warning and you have absolutely no idea what that warning is supposed to say.

This is where Fitz HR comes in. You can ask questions about the situation and generate documents such as warning letters, performance improvement plans and other employment documents. For more serious situations, Fitz also provides access to qualified HR professionals.

5. Then payday arrives

It’s Thursday. The place is busy. Someone’s called in sick. You’ve got customers waiting, messages you haven’t answered and about twelve other things demanding your attention. Oh, and everyone needs to be paid.

But the important decisions have already been made.

Your employees are set up. Their classifications are sorted. Timesheets are in. Leave is accounted for. You know what needs to be paid.

Now PaySauce gets to do what it was built to do.

  • Timesheets approved.
  • Pay calculated.
  • Payslips sent.
  • Tax reported.
  • Super handled.

PaySauce is built for small Australian businesses that don’t have a payroll department and don’t particularly want to become one. Pay runs, super, tax, timesheets and leave can all be handled in one place, from your phone.

So instead of spending Friday night working out payday, you can press run and get back to running the actual business.

And for all the people stuff that happens before, after and everywhere in between, it helps to have someone in your corner.

That’s where FitzHR comes in. From employment contracts and workplace policies to the HR questions that inevitably pop up when you have a team, they’re there to help you work through it.

Payday sorted. People stuff supported. Business back to you.
